Manton is an attractive village on the River Kennet with an interesting mixture of period and modern houses in the village centre. The main part of the village is south of the Bath Road (A4) but to the north of the Bath Road is a substantial estate of modern housing.
The Church of St George is about half a mile to the east of the village, next to Preshute House (a Grade II listed building). There was a church there in the 12th century, and possibly earlier and fragments of 12th-century masonry survive. The church was rebuilt on the same foundations and retaining the 15th-century tower. About 2 miles northwest of the village, on the Marlborough Downs is the Manton Estate. It includes Manton House, Manton Lodge and Manton House racing stables. Manton is a small village on the western outskirts of Marlborough just off the A4 Bath Road. |
